What is Feng Shui?
Feng Shui is often described as a way of bringing positive energy into your home by moving furniture and re-arranging personal items to achieve balance and harmony. While this is part of a Feng Shui analysis, there is a deeper philosophy that most people don’t know. The origins of feng shui were developed to help humans connect with the dynamics of the universe, and use the information to better our lives. The words Feng Shui literally mean wind and water. These two forces were the process by which the earth was formed. Wind is associated with one of the Chinese medicine’s five elements of wood, and water is associated with money.

| There were three great Chinese emperors in succession that contributed to ways of “raising the chi” and these methods are still used today for essential health and vitality. The first developed the philosophy of the opposing forces of yin/yang, feminine/masculine, winter/summer, and so on. Out of this he formed the eight trigrams and 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. The eight trigrams are also the basis for many martial art practices and oftentimes these broken (--) (yin) & solid (-) (yang) lines are placed on flags in a circle surrounding the tai chi symbol, seen to the right.
Adding to the first emperor’s studies, the second emperor connected the knowledge of astronomy and meteorology to the opposing forces of masculine & feminine. The Chinese became well known astronomers and actually documented an exploding star in 1045 AD. This knowledge of the planets and stars also led to understanding the growth cycles of plants, vegetables and grains. The third emperor contributing to understanding the universe was known as the Yellow Emperor. This leader took the knowledge of growth cycles for agriculture and food, along with the studies of the celestial influences, and applied these to the human body, thereby producing a new understanding of the meridians in the human body. Out of this, acupuncture, acupressure and shiatsu were formulated. Most of these involve the 5 element system. To read more, please click the link "How it Works". Back to top |
